A significant number of people switch their Medicare plans every year. Some studies have reported numbers as high as 40%.
That means they were dissatisfied (and found what they hope is a better option). A local, experienced and focused Medicare advisor should have a knowledge of the actual healthcare providers who accept the Medicare plans he or she sells. If the plan is not happy — their customers are likely to be unhappy too.
That can be especially true if you are selecting Medicare Advantage. There, the provider is paramount because you likely have no choice.
If you are choosing a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, the option you choose at age 65 may be irreversible. You may be able to switch – but you may not. That’s why working with someone who has real experience is so valuable.
We don’t want to repeat what we just said. But we continually hear from frustrated consumers as well as Medicare insurance agents. Knowing which Medicare plan(s) medical providers in your area like can be enormously valuable before you lock in a plan choice.
Providers can and do drop plans every year. They can do that. You don’t want to find yourself with a plan that others in your area aren’t happy with.
We fully support the many agents and Medicare sales organizations that utilize technology to sell Medicare solutions over the phone and the Internet. That said, we know many people still like to meet with and discuss things before making important decisions. And, your choice of Medicare plan coverage is one of the most important decisions you’ll make.
Medicare agents make money when you purchase coverage. But when you consider what they did to get you to call, it’s honestly not that profitable. Television ads are costly. Hosting a seminar is too. So are mailing.
Most Medicare advisors will tell you that what they really want is your referral. They’ll work extra hard to earn that. You want someone who will do that. It’s truly one of those win-win situations.
