“The number of Americans who have a Medicare Supplement insurance policy grows each year,” states Jesse Slome, director of the Association.  In 2018, some 14.1 million Americans had a Medicare Supplement, also commonly referred to as Medigap, policy according to AAMSI.

“More Americans than ever find the choices and options provided by Medicare Supplement insurance as their desired choice,” Slome explains. Among the benefits of having a Medigap plan is the ability to go to any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare. “That flexibility is extremely desirable especially for those who have residences in multiple locations or who travel internationally.,” Slome adds.

According to the Association, some 13.6 million Americans had a Medigap policy in 2017. Only 9.7 had this coverage in 2010 Slome notes.
