Questions To Ask Before Buying Medigap Insurance

We understand that choosing the right Medicare insurance policy can be confusing.   You are faced with multiple options and companies … and when you turn 65, your mailbox is full of solicitations.  Turning to a trusted friend who lives in the next town, may not even work.  That’s because availability and prices can vary based on your Zip Code.

The Association believes that your first (and perhaps most important) first step is finding a professional to work with.  She or he should be someone willing to educate you about your options.  Only then can they help you make a decision regarding a particular policy choice.  Recommending a Medicare insurance plan that is suited to your needs – your health preferences – and, of course, your budget.

Some Medigap insurance professionals will do this all over the telephone and/or Internet.  Others will have you meet in their offices.  Some will come to see you in your home.  Agents do not charge for this valuable assistance.  They earn a commission built into the Medigap insurance policy that is paid by the insurance company.

The following are a few key suggested questions.  Ask them when you are choosing an agent to work with.

DO YOU REPRESENT ONE OR MULTIPLE MEDIGAP COMPAYIES?  Some insurance agents only offer Medicare Supplement insurance from one company.  Others, who are typically referred to as insurance brokers, can offer policies from multiple companies.   We don’t recommend one over the other.  But, you should know this important difference.  Here’s what you should ask: “how many Medicare insurance companies are you appointed to sell?”  Appointed is insurance industry jargon that means the agent can actually sell you a policy from a specific company.  Agents only earn a commission from companies they are appointed with.

ASK ABOUT THE INSURANCE COMPANY’S HISTORY OF RATE INCREASES?  The current lowest price for Medicare Supplement insurance may seem attractive.  But rates insurers charge can change.  That’s why it’s important to ask the agent or broker about the company’s recent record of rate increases.  A good agent will have no problem sharing this information (hint, that’s a good way to ascertain a good agent).

Thank you for taking the time to read this information.  Of course, if you have questions, we strongly recommend you use the Association’s FIND AN AGENT look-up to find Medicare insurance agents in your area.   Some consumers query several agents to evaluate their responses and willingness to help.  That is a perfectly fine way to start!
