According to reports posted online, the Scripps move is somewhat rare. Today, more companies are starting and accepting Medicare Advantage plans.
Scripps began sent out letters notifying members that beginning Jan. 1, 2024, Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal would no longer accept Advantage plans from carriers including Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, UnitedHealthcare and Centene Health Net. Scripps groups will continue to accept Original Medicare, or Parts A and B.
One reporter who spoke with Scripps Health CEO and President Chris Van Gorder, noted that Scripps was reportedly on track to lose $75 million or more on the care it provides to Medicare Advantage patients (2023). Two key issues that led to the decision to stop working with Advantage plans, he said. They were “the rates insurance companies were willing to pay”. And, the tendency of sicker patients to seek treatment at top-notch medical centers such as those run by Scripps.”
There are several options. Your best move is to act during the Medicare Annual Enrollment period (AEP) that starts October 15 and ends December 7.
During AEP one can drop Medicare Advantage in favor of traditional, fee-for-service Medicare. Keep in mind that traditional Medicare has no annual out-of-pocket limit. That means you can be exposed to thousands of dollars in co-pays and deductibles.
