Questions To Ask Your Medicare Insurance Professional

The Association’s website contains some helpful articles that contain information and some tips on getting the best Medicare insurance coverage for the best price.

We strongly recommend working with what we call a Medicare insurance specialist.  That’s an insurance agent who is willing to educate you and help you select the best option for their needs and budget.  Some will do this on the phone.  Others will have you meet in their offices.  Some will come to see you in your home.  They do not charge for this valuable assistance.  They earn a commission built into the Medigap insurance policy that is paid by the insurance company.

DO YOU REPRESENT ONE COMPANY – or MULTIPLE COMPANIES?  Some insurance agents only offer Medicare insurance from one company.  Others who typically are referred to as brokers can offer policies from multiple companies.   We don’t recommend one over the other.  But, you should know this, because it’s important information before you decide.  Here’s what you should ask: “how many Medicare insurance companies are you appointed to sell?”.  Appointed is industry jargon that means they can sell you a policy (and earn a commission for doing so).

ASK ABOUT THE COMPANY’S HISTORY OF RATE INCREASES?  The lowest price for Medicare Supplement insurance may seem attractive.  But rates can change.  That’s why it’s important to ask the agent or broker about the company’s recent record of rate increases.  A good agent will have no problem sharing this information (hint, that’s a good way to ascertain a good agent).

READ OUR OTHER TIPS about available discounts and ways to save when buying Medigap insurance.  You’ll find them on the Association’s website.  Just go to the HOME PAGE and click on the CONSUMER tab.

Of course, if you have questions, we strongly recommend you use the Association’s FIND AN AGENT look-up.  You’ll find Medicare insurance agents in your area.  You can call them … or Email them your questions and requests for information.  Some consumers query several agents to evaluate their responses and willingness to help.  That is fine!

Thank you for reading.
