More 2025 Medicare Advantage Plans To Choose From

The average Medicare beneficiary has access to 39 Medicare Advantage plans in 2026, with major metro areas offering significantly more options. However, several large MA insurers reduced benefits or exited markets in 2025 and 2026. Reviewing CMS star ratings, network access, and drug formularies before enrolling is essential โ€” more plan options means more comparison work required.

NEWS โ€“ August 26, 2024 โ€“ Senior will have 40 different Medicare Advantage plans to compare for 2025. That is a significant increase, according to the American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance (AAMSI).

โ€œThe number of Medicare Advantage (MA) plans being offered continues to grow over time,โ€ shares Jesse Slome, director of the Medicare planning advocacy organization. โ€œChoice is good but it also can be confusing and cumbersome for many seniors. It can take a little work to make sure they get the best plan coverage available.

Half of all Medicare beneficiaries are now enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan according to AAMSI. โ€œThe typical Medicare beneficiary will have 40 different plans to compare for 2025,โ€ Slome reports. โ€œThatโ€™s up from 28 plans in 2020 and only 17 in 2015.โ€

Medicare provides all MA plan beneficiaries with the opportunity to compare and switch plans during the Fall. โ€œWhile a few plan providers tend to dominate the market, there can be better options available for 2025. Comparing during AEP can be beneficial.โ€

Medicareโ€™s Annual Enrollment Period begins October 15 and concludes on December 7.

The Medicare insurance expert shared several reasons he recommends seniors take advantage of this yearโ€™s AEP.

Why Compare 2025 Medicare Advantage Plans

โ€œInsurance companies may alter the benefits offered for 2025,โ€ Slome explains. โ€œThis could include changes in premiums, deductibles, copayments, out-of-pocket maximums or additional benefits.โ€ By comparing plans annually, beneficiaries can ensure they select a plan that meets their current health needs and financial situation.

MA plans often have specific networks of doctors and hospitals. โ€œIf your preferred providers are no longer in-network or if new providers and specialists are added to other plans, it may be worth considering a switch,โ€ he adds.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provides star ratings for MA plans based on quality of care and customer satisfaction. โ€œItโ€™s important to annually check out the most recent rating for your particular MA plan,โ€ Slome recommends. โ€œAt the same time, it pays to ask for ratings of other plans available in your area.โ€

The majority of Medicare Advantage plans now offer extra benefits that are not covered by Original Medicare according to Slome. These include dental, vision, hearing and even gym memberships. โ€œBut the levels of coverage can vary widely. And this can be an important factor for seniors who need costly dental work as an example,โ€ Slome points out.

Nearly 33 million Americans currently have Medicare Advantage coverage according to AAMSI. โ€œAll 33 million have exactly 53 days to compare and make a decision,โ€ Slome concludes. โ€œThere just are not enough professionals available to help everyone so we strongly recommend finding and connecting with a local Medicare Advantage expert early to ensure you book some calendar time.โ€

Frequently asked questions:

How many Medicare Advantage plans are available in 2026?

The average Medicare beneficiary has access to approximately 39 Medicare Advantage plans in 2026, a slight decrease from 2025. The number varies significantly by location โ€” major metro areas like Houston and Los Angeles offer many more options than rural areas. Having more choices makes comparison shopping important but also more time-consuming.

Do all Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage?

Most do, but not all. Medicare Advantage plans that include Part D drug coverage are called MA-PD plans. Some plans offer medical coverage only, without drug coverage. If you enroll in a plan without drug coverage, you will need to determine whether you can separately enroll in a Part D plan or whether you must go without drug coverage under that plan type.

What extra benefits do Medicare Advantage plans typically offer?

Most plans now include some combination of dental, vision, hearing, and fitness benefits that Original Medicare does not cover. However, the actual value of these benefits varies widely. A dental benefit that covers only cleanings and X-rays is very different from one that includes major dental work, so reviewing the specific benefit limits before enrolling is essential.

How do CMS star ratings help me choose a Medicare Advantage plan?

CMS assigns star ratings from 1 to 5 based on quality of care and customer satisfaction data. Higher-rated plans have generally shown better performance on health outcomes, member satisfaction, and care coordination. Checking the star rating of your current plan and comparing it to alternatives in your area is a valuable step during Annual Enrollment Period review.

Is it safe to enroll in a newer Medicare Advantage plan with lower premiums?

Newer plans sometimes offer lower introductory premiums to attract enrollment but may adjust pricing in subsequent years as their claims data develops. Established plans with several years of history give you more information about premium stability and benefit reliability. Asking a local Medicare agent about a planโ€™s track record can help you evaluate newer entrants more carefully.
